How to Draw a 1:5 Ratio Body Part 2

Now that we’ve gotten through the tricky process of learning how to draw a face, we’ll dive right into how to draw the body and add some color to this individual’s life.

INCOMING!

Tomorrow, expect to see an exciting, new tutorial on how to draw a faerie with a head, body ratio of 1:6. Its finally here! Well, it only took one day to create her. I think I’m going to detail her wings and make them more glistening.

So now we have a face drawn. Step 2, let’s learn how to draw everything else.

Imagine how to draw the character you envision in your mind. Draw a line that travels downward and to the right while curving downward and to the left. Draw a second line on the opposite side that travels downwards and to the left while curving downwards and to the right. To draw the collar, draw a line that travels downwards and to the right while curving upwards and to the right. You can reverse this with the other collar. With collars, they do not always form the same shape, especially depending on the fabric that the collar is made out of. The bottom part of the collar is generally a curve traveling upward, though if this collar is folded somewhat, this part might develop a wavy shape.

Draw four lines that travel downwards. Two on the left are going to curve to the left, while two on the right are going to curve to the right. Since the character is going to be holding a bowl in front of her, the sleeves will lay over her arms in somewhat curving fashions. Underneath the sleeves will be the arms, which do not need to be fully drawn because of the bowl. These will be forearms, which generally get thicker towards the elbow and thinner towards the wrist. If you want, try to draw the individual fingers that hold the bowl. This character will be holding the top of the bowl with one hand while keeping her hand underneath the bowl with the other hand for support.

The bowl is drawn by drawing a mostly symmetrical curving line that travels horizontally and curves upwards. A second line travels horizontally while curving downwards. The bottom part of the bowl is drawn by taking the edges and drawing a horizontal line that curves widely downward. Skirts vary in the way they are drawn. This skirt has an uneven bottom. This is done by drawing a bunch of wavy lines that end at different points, which will have curving lines at the bottom connecting them to have different strips. The wavy lines on the farthest left and right will curve more inward as the skirt wraps around the lower half of the body.

Now, how to draw the feet. Feet aren’t the easiest body parts to draw for a lot of people. These feet mostly consist of lines that curve inward and towards each other. The heels are curves that curve the opposite direction of the curve that makes up the inner part of the foot. For the toes, draw small and long bumps, with the toe being the largest bump.

Choose a color to color the skin with. On the computer, if you have found a skin color or other color that you want to use, you can save that picture to your computer, select that color using the eyedropper tool, and then use that color.

Choose colors for the clothes. Now that you have drawn out the character, you might decide to color her. If you have a really steady hand, you might be able to draw between the lines without touching them. But with a graphics program, you can also do all your drawing on a transparent layer and color underneath the lines. Or a final trick is to set your brush on multiply, which will cause your brush to not color completely over the lines without losing them.

Finish up by coming up with a color for the hair and bowl.

These how to draw guides are a little tricky to describe sometimes. Please let me know if these guides are clear or not at sketchinghouse@gmail.com. I would especially love it if you had an idea as to how I could more easily describe what is going on in these drawings.

Thanks for reading!
